February is just about in the books, and March is usually the best month to be out on the ice — whether you’re fishing or riding. Especially this year, the best is still ahead of us.
Not much has changed since my last report two weeks ago, so I’ll keep this one short. Ice conditions are still excellent, ranging from 24″ to 28″ in most areas.
The biggest change has been the snow we got last weekend. It’s smoothed out the riding conditions for sleds, which is great for them — but what helps the sleds has made it tougher going for wheelers and side-by-sides. With the added weight of the snow, slush is starting to show up in spots, mainly on the Broadalbin and Mayfield end of the lake. Around Scout Island seems to have the most right now.
With warmer temps expected on Saturday, I’d expect things to get slushy in more areas — don’t worry, though, there’s still plenty of solid ice underneath. The upside is that by next week the snow should settle down, and conditions ought to improve quite a bit.
When the land trails start turning to dirt in the next couple of weeks, the lake will just be hitting its stride. Not just for sleds either — it’ll make getting around for ice fishing a whole lot easier. There’s nothing better than driving your truck out on the ice in the second week of March, 40-degree weather, fishing in a T-shirt, favorite beverage in hand, and catching a little sun off that reflection.
Fishing Report:
Fishing has been slow overall for most species, but the walleyes brought some size this year in the Walleye Challenge.
Tip of the week:
Polaris’s run hot.
