Great Sacandaga Lake Report
April 1st – Spring Conditions Update
Good morning and happy spring.
It might be April Fool’s Day, but this is no joke — the lake level is rising fast, and it’s coming up by the hour.
Since the beginning of March, the lake has already come up 13 feet, putting it right around where we were in mid-August last year. With last night’s rain, more on and off through the week, and snowmelt coming down from the north, we’re expecting another 6 feet of rise in the next couple of days.
If you’ve got a dock in the water, now’s the time —
get it up on shore as far as you can, check it often, and tie it off well — or there’s a good chance it’s going to disappear on you.
A lot of folks left docks way out last fall because of the low water, and that’s going to catch up with people quick.
Another thing to keep in mind — there’s still about 8–10 inches of ice floating around on the main lake. With a little wind, that turns into a full-blown wrecking ball. Hoping this warm runoff chews through the rest of it fast and saves some damage.
By next week, the lake should be at or near full capacity. If the weather cooperates, you could get a boat out, but don’t expect a crowd — water temps are sitting around 34°, and the air over the lake isn’t much warmer.
